It was dark out. The rain was starting to come down in steady streams buffeted this way and that way by the wind. I was walking to the bus stop from my previous class. I didn’t have an umbrella. Please let there be someone waiting at the bus stop that I can least talk to so I can pass the time, I thought.
In the dim light and the rain, I saw a small figure standing by the bus stop under an umbrella. I seem to remember she was wearing pink.
“Hey!” I called out, “is the bus coming soon?”
“Two minutes,” she said. She had a high pitched voice.
“Cool,” I said, “I was afraid I was going to have to hide in a building for safety since I don’t have an umbrella”.
She lifted up her umbrella several inches, and looked expectedly at me. I walked over and huddled under the umbrella.
She told me her name.
“I’m Jack.”
The bus came soon after that. We sat down near the middle of the bus. She had a thin face and sharp features. She was prettier than I expected.
“What building do you live in?” I asked her.
“700.”
“That’s the same building that I live in!” I exclaimed.
“Really? What apartment number?”
“738.”
“I live in the apartment right under you.”
“Really?”
“I think so.”
“I know someone from every apartment on my floor.” I bragged.
“Did you meet them all on the bus?” she asked.
“No…I mean yes actually, I guess I did.”
The bus had pulled up to our apartment building.
“I know four people in courtyards, my roommates and someone in building 2,” she said, “and now I know you.”
